I always move away or put out my cigarette when non smokers are around, I always ask if it's OK if I smoke around others - never assume, I NEVER throw my butts on the ground, and yet I'm treated like I'm an inconsiderate ***** just because I smoke! I'm always extremely coutreous to people, why can't they pay me the same back?

Robby T - what the hell do you care what I'm doing to myself? It's really none of your business!

When I see a smoker in their car put their butt out in their car instead of throwing it on the ground, I always say thank you. Always! You just don't hear me because we're in separate cars. : )

As an ex-smoker who is now bothered by cigarette smoke, I understand both sides. The biggest problem IMHO is that it's hard for a smoker to realize how bad cigarette smoke smells to a non smoker. It's also hard to know just how sensitive a non-smoker can be to cigarette smoke that's quite some distance away.

In a perfect world, all smokers would realize these things and all smokers would be as courteous as you are. But this is far from a perfect world.

Think of a nauseating smell. And then imagine sitting in a restaurant having to smell that, with the onus being on YOU to try to get the smell removed without offending anyone. It's extremely uncomfortable for all involved.

I too am a considerate smoker. I don't do it around people I know it will bother. I don't smoke in my home. I don't smoke in my car. I don't smoke in a restaurant. I don't even smoke in a bar that allows it if there are a lot of people around.

I think I've been brainwashed by the non-smokers out there to feel ashamed of my behavior, but so be it. I just think it's my addiction so nobody else should pay for it.

Unless of course you're talking about smoking in private establishments where the owner wishes to allow it. That really pisses me off.

Hey sweetie. Everyone who is inconsiderate and rude to you because you are a smoker can go to hell. I am a non-smoker myself but lived with parents who both smoked and I HATED to go for a ride in the car. I admire you for being polite to people who don't smoke. People hate me because I am fat. We ALL have our weaknesses and bad habits. The worst bad habit of all is being judgemental of all others. They see themselves as perfect and are actually the bitches in life. The thin non smoking good looking selfish assholes are what make life miserable for those of us who are big enough people to admit our shortcomings. Don't let it bother you that much. However as a nurse I must tell you there is a new med out to help you quit smoking. I have some nurse friends who have quit cold turkey by taking the med.

Are you letting there children see you smoke? Some people don't even want to put the idea into there children's heads about even thinking of smoking. Some people are allergic to smoke. It can be a number of things, just remember that they are not God and have no right to judge you. You are a courteous smoker and aren't doing anything wrong to them. Ignore them.

Well I know some can't help it, and that's possibly you, but I don't want to be around any type of smoker. Secondhand smoke is often more hazardous than smoking itself. My sister and I also have asthma and are unable to be around smokers--some can't help it!! But some just don't want to. I don't blame them! Smoking is horrible for the smoker but also for everyone around them. It stinks. It's gross. It's not worth it. Maybe it's your choice, but I will never make such a decision.

Yes ! Courtesy is reciprocal. Okay, smoking is bad for your health but it is a legal act. It's not an offence to be a smoker. Besides the tar that people injest in peak hour traffic from carbon based car pollution would really blow the mind of non-smoker.

I have no idea. I am also a considerate smoker but I still get crap from the "good" people. My sister in law complains about me smoking and "how it's gross and it's cutting years off my life" But she's a huge drinker and she's 2 months pregnant. I have a child myself but I don't smoke around her or in the car with her. I make sure she's inside watching cartoons and I sneak to the side of the house.

I'm a smoker always and I try do be polite about it also. But honestly If they want to treat me like a B then so be it, I can treat them the same way back. If someone wants to judge me because I smoke and not for my good qualities, then I honestly don't want them as a friend or an acquaintance. Their lose :)

I know how you feel. I do not smoke in my own home, nor do I smoke in my car. My smoking is strictly limited to the great outdoors. If I'm at a friend's house, and have an urge I can't fight, I ask if I may go outside for a quick smoke. Like you, I never leave my butts on the ground. I think that it's the act that they hate, but not me personally. I'm not so fond of smoking anymore, either, but I can't seem to quit.
