Price fixing is illegal because it does more harm than good. The same is true for price controls.

Price fixing verses price control ? price control protects the consumer by what should be a fair cost, whereas price fixing gouges and extorts money at the highest level possible to benefit a few fat cats that don't need it anyway and destroys the trade economy and so much more...
similarities: price fixing = Loan sharking for example
price control = fair trade value

You made a mistake, it is Congress imposing it's will on the free market.

You have also hit on a conundrum, why do we go to jail for what Congress does on a daily basis?

Perhaps Congress thinks it is above the law.
