It is a very strange superstition. In the UK a white cat is considered bad luck. in Japan a cat with a tail is considered bad luck. I am a witch and have 3 cats, none black. One is a cameo/orange tabby, one is a grey & white bi colour and the other is calico.

I'm a witch, and don't own a cat. I have a light brown puppy, so that's a stereotype that is not always true. Some may have black cats but that's probably an esthetic choice, or chance.

I've never personally considered black cats bad luck. I was actually raised with the superstition that white cats were bad luck as they often have health problems, therefore a white cat crossing your path is a sign of upcoming poor fortune/luck/health. My mother is Australian and says that such a belief is common there.

The cat is always black because black is associated with witchcraft. white is pure. Black cats only bring bad luck if they cross in front of you. I myself will turn and go the other way if I see one.
