On August 4th, 1914, Germany invaded Belgium. Due to treaties, Britain then declared war on Germany. France and Russia supported Britain. Austria supported Germany. Only Italy did not get involved - yet
The murder of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo is accepted by historians as the immediate cause of World War One though serious trouble - long term causes - had been brewing for sometime.

Well, if you mean word war, probably a few cave men. As for the first world war, that would be the assassination of the Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian Throne, not the current ruler like someone else said.

World War I started in 1914 when Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austro-Hungary. Austro-Hungary invaded Serbia, Russia retaliated, and the powder keg was sparked. WWI began.

Russia! Until the Russians mobilized it wasn't a World War, just a squabble between Austria and Serbia. Russia marched to save their "little brothers" (the Slavic Serbs) from angry Austria. This caused Von Moltke to panic and tell Little Willie (the Kaiser) that Germany MUST follow THE PLAN and attack France through Belgium.

nationalism, build up of military, entangling alliances, imperialism and dissent among minorities.
anyone guilty of having this in their country is to blame for the war. serbia, princip, franz ferdinand, and austria were just the matches that ignited the flames of war.
