I gather that individual and social life everywhere is in the grip of various pretensions. We tend to hide behind things we don't believe to be true. What connects us so closely to falsehood?

Pretense and falsehood allows a disconnect from realities that we don't want or that are hurtful.

People tend to hide behind constructs because it gives them to power to shape their reality into something that utlimately suits their needs better. Have no skills, or are otherwise unemployable? Hide behind the construct that immigrants or the government has taken your job opportunities away.

Incompetent? Hide behind the construct that your employer is a racist.

Etc.

It is simply because the truth is so boring. When you lie to your friends, or visa versa they all know. You are not fooling anyone. However, no one says anything because you are not boring (get my drift?)Although no one would ever trust you or maybe even truly like you (friend or otherwise) so, in contrast why lie when its so easy to tell the truth? You may not be interesting, but at least you would be trustworthy and believable and most would like you due to your sweet honest disposition rather than the NORM which have become egotistical liars in the pursuit of nothing more than attention like a starved two year old...and one more thing why post such silly rhetorical questions..I mean I am sure you know the answer for yourself and just wanted some reassurance..hmm but who am i to judge alittle affirmation does the mind good.

It is so much easier for each of us to see the pretensions in the lives of other cultures.

These social mores are passed down, usually by word of mouth to every generation.

They are generally meant to evoke a certain type of behaviour.

Some religions have begun in this way and
become "absolute truth" to some people.

Mostly these traditions and "folklore" are a comfort to people.

You ask what connects us to falsehoods. It is ourselves. We often do not want people to see our foibles. We are afraid to leave our taboos, they keep us safe (or so we believe). It takes a lot of time and effort to get rid of all the pretensions in life. I do it one at a time. I have learned to be very polite when dealing with people that want to hide behind dogma. I do not wish to inflict my day to day life style on others. If they are happy let them be happy.

You sure aren't speaking about me. I don't consider myself to be a sheep.....most people are when you think about it....they all like to follow each other feeling safe, always saying or doing the right thing....WHY.....because people are afraid to speak up or out. People have become lazy. I think alot of people think that what's the point nothing can be done about it. I can't stand that attitude personally. I love speaking out about stuff that's BS.......maybe that's why I'm enjoying this question answer site..........Man there's alot of people out there in this counrty that are ignorant to alot of things. It's nice to see how many people respond and actually try to give them good and honest answers. I love it. I've always wondered this myself. How come we (people) seem to make such a big deal out of the little stupid things and make them worse? Personally I wish someone that had the knowledge could get the American people motivated to get off there butts and do something constructive about all the complaints we have. Whinning about it isn't going to accomplish a damn thing. Hasn't so far has it. Stand the hell up for a change......you might like it. MLJ

Family failure, from the beginning, to live, show, teach, and demand from their children, from birth, that Integrity, Virtue, Ethics, Morality and Responsibility are the ONLY values that they MUSTand can live by and that they may NEVER be compromised or be for sale.

We fail to teach that EVERY human life is valid and demands respect! Males disrespect the female, female disrespect them selves.

Nature created two kinds of humans, male and female, but mans crap, created Chinese, Korean, German, American, etc for what? In nature, no male is different from any other male, same with female.

We teach that school is required so that we can get more! Living, sharing, helping, responsibility, appreciation, respect, humility, family are no where to be found!

Too, many people want to discard religion, but it is only in religious teachings are all humans called to live by the Ten Commandments, or to love they neighbor as one loves thy self!

There are no people, any place on this earth that do not want to be treated as called for by the Ten Commandments! One cannot say they love anyone unless they treate them as it is called for in the commandments.

Humans have crucified Respect, Mother & Father Families, children, the Female, Responsibility, Truth, and humility!

And you question Pretensions?

Not in every ones culture is covered with pretensions.Only the Asians. They are so hippocrates. They try to show the people the picture what is not at all what it is. The society is responsible for this.Suppose a person fall in love with a woman after marriage and both are not happy with their partners but still they have to go with them--to show the society that yes we are so pure and perfect.Who told you they are perfect and who made it a rule that to go with their partner without any LOVE is fine.I think its really a patetic condition for any one.In my opinion the people can leaad their life as he /she need without effecting others.Life is not to live as a dead person--to live happily. So we have to change our views and the society which is built by us.We have responsibilities to change---Like Sati daha and widow marriages etc

Shakespeare said in his play where a father (Pollonius) advises his son "To thy own self be true.......
.and what is more, my son, you will be a man!"

It IS possible to be honest. It is difficult because it requires self-discipline; anything hard (truth) is more difficult than something easy (like lying!)
People easily slip into lies and falsehoods because of their EGO, when they want to be what they are not, give the impression to others something they do not have/ possess/ of are not.
Societies too can propagate lies.

I am 23 years old virgin. I never kiss a man. Good for you to be a virgin. Keep your pride and never compromise/give up your values. It is hard to avoid lust because men are visual animals. Most men will look at women and decide whether they love her or not--it is lust. After a while, when men and women get to know each others. They develop much more deeper feelings for each others--it is love.
