I guess if you hit them in the head with it. Othewise the field it puts out is not proven to cause harm

A portable commericially made metal detector would not pose a risk. Note that even a Magnetic Resonant or Computer Tomography scanner is not a risk. Magnetic fields need to be extremely strong to potentially be of any risk Electromagnetic fields are probably more important to worry about. An example is a microwave oven. It's radiation can cook you like a warmed up hot dog!

Only if you are really sensitive to equipment like that. Most people aren't. Plus there's a floor/ceiling between you. So you probably don't have to worry.
