My stylist told me that wavy/curly hair tends to hang on to loose strands that would normally fall through and out of straight hair. These loose strands can become tangled in with the hair that is still on your head and cause some knotting. Brushing your hair before you wash it can help, and brushing it several times during the day (if your style allows) will help get the loose strands out.
Also, you might want to look at the shampoo/conditioner you're using. I just tried to switch, and my hair became twice as tangled as it was before. Then I went to a shampoo/conditioner with a higher moisture content and now the tangles are back down to normal.
Leave-in conditioners or detanglers are also a big help when you're combing your hair. Try that out as well.

I feel weird answering this in the math section, but here goes. Naturally wavy and curly hair has a lot of texture to it and it dries out easily. That combination leads to tangles. Here are some tips to help you:
-Don't wash your hair every day with shampoo and let some of your natural oils set in.
-Run your hair under water each morning (like in the shower) and use a super moisturizing conditioner every day.
-Always let your hair air dry.
-Don't sleep when your hair is wet.
-Use a wide tooth comb to comb your hair.
-Use a product called "Noodle Head" by Beyond Zone. It works wonders.
Hope this helps!

Most long hair tends to knot easily especially fine/thin hair. I suggest you use a detangler when combing it to avoid breakage.
