[1] First Opium War (1840-43). The British landed troops from India and bombarded Chinese forts with their warships. The British were much better armed and organized than the Chinese, easily capturing Canton and then moving on up the Yangtze. The Chinese sued for peace. Negotiations began in 1842, and were completed in 1843 via the Treaty of Nanjing. This treaty ceded Hong Kong to the British; allowed them to establish trade via several low tariff ports; and to establish Christian missions in China.

[2] Second Opium War (1856-60). British and French forces took Guangzhou and Tianjin. The Chinese had to accept the treaty of Tianjin (1858), to which France, Russia, and the United States were also party. China agreed to open 11 more ports, permit foreign legations in Beijing, sanction Christian missionary activity, and legalize the import of opium. But China tried to prevent foreign diplomats entering Beijing. The British and French occupied Beijing and burned the Imperial Summer Palace (Yuan ming yuan). This resulted in the Beijing conventions of 1860, by which China was forced to confirm the terms of the Treaty of Tianjin and make additional concessions.

The allies began military operations in late 1857 and quickly forced the Chinese to sign the treaties of Tientsin (1858), which provided residence in Peking for foreign envoys, the opening of several new ports to Western trade and residence, the right of foreign travel in the interior of China, and freedom of movement for Christian missionaries. In further negotiations in Shanghai later in the year, the importation of opium was legalized. The Chinese, however, refused to ratify the treaties, and the allies resumed hostilities, captured Peking, and burned the emperor's summer palace. In 1860 the Chinese signed the Peking Convention, in which they agreed to observe the treaties of Tientsin.
