I'm not black, but I'd like to understand it more.
We have black neighbors and I wished him a Merry Christmas. He wished me a Happy Kwanza. Now, I'm going to ask,"what is Kwanza?" Thank you. .

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwanzaa (which is basically what almost every other answerer will simply cut & paste from and claim as their own writings by not adding an accreditation)

But basically it's a 40 year old celebration started by black americans to celebrate their heritage.

Can you imagine the racism claims there would be if whites did the same, or asians.

It also brings to the fore the question, which do black American Christians celebrate as it's supposed to be celebrated instead of Christmas, not alongside it

Kwanzaa was manufactured byy Ron Karenga in 1967 while leader of the United Slaves Organization. It's a huge step backward for African Americans and only delays their rise to success among the general population, much like gangsta rap does.

It is an American invention that melds the African American branch of "first fruits" celebrations of classical African cultures.
