AND, is testosterone really the libido-causing hormone for BOTH genders? In my psychopharmacology class years ago, my (female) professor taught us that testosterone is responsible for the male sex drive, while estrogen and progesterone is responsible for the female sex drive --- she was a smart lady with a PhD, teaching at a prestigious university. It'd make sense, since it's estrogen that's responsible for all of the female sexual characteristics. Very masculine women probably have higher testosterone levels, and they never seem interested in sexual relations at all.

As for the original question, with women committing just as much adultery as men these days, I'd have to wonder if men are really hornier than women. Men are clearly easier to please and in many cases less selective, but I'm not so sure that men really have a stronger sex drive.

depends on the man and woman involved and the circumstances of their lives..sex drive is a totally individual thing.

I also agree with I Know, I know. The fact is that without the male drive, the species would not continue. Propagation of the species depends on the strong male drive because if we relied upon the women, the men could simply refuse and the women would not be able to overcome that refusal. I understand that the male drive also creates much wickedness in the form of rape and abuse and a lot of unplanned pregnancies. Now consider if the men were just as physically strong as compared to the women, but had no sex drive whatsoever, then how often would men bother to have sex? Not very often and the women could not seduce them or coax them or force them so the species would not be replenished. Of course we know that the presence of testosterone in the male blood stream is what creates the physical strength as well as the sex drive so the two go together. So if men did not have the sex drive, then they might not have the testosterone and might not have the strength as well. If the women have the drive, then maybe they have testosterone and also the strength so they can force sex upon the weaker men. However, we also know that if women have too much testosterone, then their Estrogen and progesterone cycle is thrown out of whack and they don't ovulate, thus no reproduction either. So bottom line is that we are made the way we are so that reproduction will take place the way it is intended.

I do not question the part that hormones play in your sex life, but actually I believe that whether your very sexual or asexual, is more a "brain" thing combine with hormones, not just them alone.
There are studies that indicate that the are neurotransmitter or chemical signs that go off in your brain only when you are having a real orgasm or for example that they tend to make you more horny,in women only, for example during that part of your period when you are ovulating, cause remember that nature intended sex to be a procreative issue not just a re-creative issue like we now a days view sex. That why men can have sex all the time, they are program to reproduce and women are more selective they had to choose the best male to carry the genes to the next generation.
And for the part of women committing more adultery, that's just things have change my friend and we are not in the dark ages any more; we shop around, but at the end, women usually choose always the best male !

I'm not going to give you my thoughts on the matter, mostly because they're of the type that are poorly articulated, but I had to give you the link to an article I read today in the New York Times online. It's called "Birds Do It. Bees Do It. People Seek The Keys to It." The whole thing is about new research that's been or is being done about sexual desire, arousal, and the differences observed in different genders and age groups. I just stumbled on it in the science section, but it was really interesting! Enjoy!

Yes , isn't it obvious !! Due to testosterone levels , men are cursed with FAR higher sex drives than women. Women don't experience sexual frustration.

think of it in terms of evolution instead of bodychemistry.

teh reason we get aroused: to have sex.
the purpose of sex: reproduction.
how do we reproduce: man fertalises, woman carries baby 9 months.
importance of sexual partner: chosing the right partner will get a healthy offspring.

so what happens of we get it wrong?
man fertalises a woman with bad genes, pisses of. and finds a better one. woman is fertalised by a man with bad genes. she has to cary a potentially unhealthy baby for 9 months.

it figures for women to be much more selective with partners, since if they make a bad call, theyre most certainly stuck with the consequences. and a man may not, he could simply move on to the next mate.

if women need to be more selective with offsprings, it would make much more sense for a women to be less intoxicated by the other sex, since intoxication impares judgement.

for men, the opposite is true, the more intoxicated they are, the more quickly theyll just spread those genes around.

Also, working out increases test. When I am weight training, my sex drive increases.

Athletic men usually have higher sex drives than nonathletic men.

Men definitely have a higher sex drive. Women are experiencing more sexual freedom. If you want to see how sex drive works, note the gay versus the lesbian community. Very different.

dont forget that women mostly dont have affairs for the same reasons as men. men see them as filling sexual fantasy or need. women can do it for attention rather than sex(but it helps!) but i agree men more than women
