Pentium D, by a far margin.

Not only does it have a larger on chip cache, but it also has two processors, where as the Pentium 4 only has one. Although the two cores have a slower clock speed than the P4, they will allow you to multitask better and wil yield far better performance (than the P4) when multiple applications are running.

Hands down the Pentium D. Two cores are much, much better then one and the cache is substantially larger. The performance difference will be very noticeable. Additionaly, the p4 is the best of its line, and therefore not upgradeable without changing motherboards. The motherboard supporting the PD will support additional upgrades in the future.

The Pentium d is better because it has a dual CPU. The Ghz is 3.0 but since it is dual, it's estimated around 6.0 ghz. And it has 4mb cache i believe.

Pentium D...it will run as 4 threads in Windows where as the P4 will only run as 2. Sometimes speed is not everything.

Well, you know what they say: two cores are better than one. That's 3.0Ghz for EACH core. Plus, it has a 4MB cache compared with a 1MB cache on the P4...MUCH better! Go with the dual-core.
