Money is the key tonic for everyone and need is to feed one, take water, have clothing and shelter and some security in life. All these things can be got with money only. If no money, you do not get even tea/coffee to drink. Hence, you have to learn and gain some knowledge and become skillful to earn money. Needed money is earned and it is sufficient to meet the necessities in life. However, you go for comforts and then seeing others living in more comfort, go for luxuries and thus you wants and desires double one after the other. Thus, the earning becomes more. However, earned money, one never tries to spend except for himself. To give to others and spend what you earned will never happen. Hard-earned money, you know how much efforts are put and you expect that effort should not be put by your children and you want them to be more confortable than yours. Hence, poeple earn more money and do not spend than what they earned in their whole life.

I have earned more than 5100 points. I will not spend them in my whole life.
I earn more money as desired by my wife. She to me: Earn more. I desired Prince and not begger. Go to work, use brain, work hard, earn more, more, more so that I can buy lates, fancy etc. etc.
I earn more but I get less in return. I earn for all but all refuse to help me. I work for 11 hours in office. I need simple homely fresh natural food and I am forced to eat fast food, bad food, undesired food, fried food etc. Ladies should give respect to Kamau Pati. Ladies should get more and give more. Ladies force a man to become corrupt.

Not all do it and many like me, spend more than what we earn.
However to answer your question, money accumulated besides being a measure of ones success is also the lifeboat one uses to remain afloat in the materialistic world. The larger ones lifeboat the more secure one feels.

It is purely greed, we fall into a catch-22 situation where we want to earn more and more, not knowing for what reason. We can satisfy needs, but not greed. Greed has no limit. So people, even if they have a hundred lives, will not be able to satisfy their greed.
