I am hearing the word "nappy" a lot lately. I have never heard it before and have no idea what it means. All I know that some people got very upset that it was said and that it has a racist meaning to it.
Can someone please explain what it means and why it's offensive?

I don't know if you are serious or not. But, I think you can tell Black people have coarse, tight, curly hair. And for years images, media, society have said it was wrong, and even discriminated against blacks for their hair..Be it locs, braids, cornrows, afros...So some are offended, and find it racist. However, there are some like myself who like having a Nappy head of hair..wore an Afro for 3 years....

Nappy is a derogatory term used to describe a black persons hair. ie: "nappy headed" Black people on the female basketball team were described inappropiately as "nappy headed ho's" Thats where the upset came.

'nappy' headed referes to Black peoples hair that is tight and curly (nappy). It was often used offensively in the past to dehumanize blacks. But I don't think it was so much the 'nappy' headed reference as it was calling them Ho's. (I assume you know what a HO is.)

The primary meaning of nappy (in American) diaper: so it's pretty inoffensive in its normal application.

If it's used of a black woman's hair though, I suppose I can imagine why people might get offended.

Hey don't feel so bad. I had no idea what nappy meant so I asked my black friend on here. She said that it really meant matted hair. In other words saying that black women don't brush their hair

It's a slang term for hair texture. "Nappy" hair is tight tight curls, rough textured, or something along those lines. It is often used towards African people. Although any "color" can have this hair texture.
