I am not sure it is real hate. Fans are loyal to their teams. I live in Michigan, near the University of Michigan. U of M fans "hate" MSU and OSU fans and their teams. But it isn't a real hate, for the most part. It is really a love to hate.

They are the "enemy". We boo them, they boo us. Not for hatred reasons, but because that is what fans do.

Occasionally, some fans do get out of hand. Like if U of M fans go to Columbus for a game, they might find their car keyed or tires slashed. That is when it crosses the line.

So we come now to Canada versus the US. I tell you right now if North Korea attacked Canada, Americans would be arm in arm with their Canadian brothers, fighting every step of the way. But in sports, we boo Canadians because our team (Let's Go Red Wings!) is trying to beat the Calgary Flames. We want the CUP! So do they. Therefore, they are the enemy.

It is just simple rivalry. Most of them do not actually HATE one another... at least, not on any real level. That said, many Canadians perceive Americans as thinking they are better than everyone, and they are frustrated that big money has resulted in many Canadian teams moving out of the country. Americans, on the other hand, get annoyed at Canadians who think their mastery of hockey somehow dictates how important they should be in the hockey world. Throw in political rivalries that shouldn't, but often do make a difference in the scheme of things, tempers flare. In the end, however, it comes down to the teams on the ice in that Stanley Cup series. If it is your team, American or Canadian, you want them to win. The natural reaction to this is that you will "hate" the other team and its fans. It is no big deal. Lord knows my siblings hated me when we battled in competitions, be it sports or board games or who could clean their room the fastest. Mean things were said, and blood was let. In the overall scheme of things, however, we cared for each other. Most sports fans are that way, too. Good people... with a mean streak. That's hockey!

hmmm....I can only give you what I have experienced or know about.

A lot of Canadians feel (sadly there is a lot of justification for this) that Americans are tinkering with "their" game -- shootouts, 3 point games, instigator rule, what have you -- and destroying it. A lot of Canadian teams have also moved to the states for economic reasons.

Since I am from the states, I also see our side -- that just because I was born in Los Angeles or someone is from Nashville or Florida or Dallas we are tagged and labeled that "obviously" we cannot know anything about Hockey.

Check out Bob Loblaw vs. Clueless feuds from a Month ago which ended when we more or less agreed not in so many words that we each had a point there.

I think most people would do well to remember two things: 80% or more of players are CANADIAN and it is the SPORT, the greatest game ever invented that matters, not where it is being played and who is watching it.

I do remember a Canadian and an American team playing up in Canada and they BOO ed our national Anthem. That's one possibility.Another may be that the Canadians feel it is THEIR GAME when it really (league wise) started in Northern Michigan.Another reason may be that they feel we are stealing their Teams and Players. When in all time this has been the case the Canadian players have been coming to America since it went into the Professional Rankings. The teams and players are coming here because they can't make as good a living in their own country and that does not sit lightly with the Canadian fans. They also have had a great animosity towards us Politically and economically. Then you add that the Stanley Cup has made AMERICA home for SO many years, all of this adds up to TENSION. GO WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Canadians and americans get along pretty well. And the only hate I can think of is just regional rivalries, no different then two states that have beef. Normally is a canadian goes to america no one even knows they are canadian and vice versa.

I think it's more specific teams that all American and all Canadian fans hating each other. Sabres fans and Leafs fans are never going to get along, period. I know plenty of Canadian people who are Habs and Canucks fans and we talk about hockey and do just fine. It's just those trouble-making Leafs losers I can't stand!

I love my Canadian brothers and sisters. They might feel a bit anxious over having the lower 48 be so prominent in "Their" game but when all said and done the plurality of players in the league are still rough and ready Western Canada boys.

And their anthem is much easier to sing than ours (just as long as I don't need to do the french words).

To be honest there is a little bit of rivalry there. Canadian fans tend to underestimate the level of support by hockey fans in the US and the US tends to see Canadian fans as elitists and a little whiny.

However, there is more hatred between fans of Canadian teams than there is crossing the borders.
