If not, then i'm wasting my time when I virus scan my Desktop.

They usually infect exe, com and dll files, but they can really affect any file. Plus, if you have executable files on your Desktop, they will need scanned. Viruses can also create files and put them on your Desktop, so if you don't scan it, it will stay there.

No. LNK files are not a file that can be infected. Only altered to point to a different target. For example, Let's say you installed my software DF1Tools. It creates a shortcut on your desktop that points to C:\Program Files\Novalogic\Deltaforce\DF1Tools3.BAT

Now a virus can not do anything to a shortcut becuase all an LNK file is IS a link. It's just says, Hey Windows, Go run this program, And let's stay in THIS folder or that while working.

The virus would more likely try to infect .EXE's .COM's DLL's, and .TMP's. I'm sure there are more but those are the most commonly infected file types.

a virus is a malicious program so it can't infect a shortcut but a shortcut could point to a virus so you're not wasting your time scanning your desktop
when scanning you should scan the entire computer just in case there's one hiding somewhere

No...and don't bother to scan your desktop if you don't want to, but it only takes a second to do so why not...
