If A Guinea Pig Is What You Want Then Don't Give Up! Its Taken Me 5 Years Since The Death Of My 2 Bunnies To Get Another One! But Thats Mostly Due To A College CourseOn Animal Care I'm Starting. I Started Off By Asking For Dog And Eventually They Gave In And Said Ok, You Can Have A Rabbit. I Have To Wait Untill June To Get It But It's Gonna Be Worth It :)

Guinea Pigs Don't Smell. They Are Very Clean Animals And The Oly Thing To Smell Would Be The Cage Or Hutch If It Isn't Cleened Properly. Guinea Pigs Aren't Very Expensive To Buy But Cages And Equipment Can Cost A Bit At The Start. But ou Could Look Into Buying Cages Second Hand-That Way They Are Cheaper. Also Check Out

Tell your parents that I have 11 guinea pigs and they certainly do not smell. My parents would sooo not let me have so many if they smelt because they are very picky about smells. They need a spacious cage and to be honest, yes they can be a lot of money to look after. It is best to rescue or buy from a RESPONSIBLE breeder. Do not go to a petshop because petshops support backyard breeders (who keep their animals in poor conditions). Remember guinea pigs NEED a friend so get a pair at least. They aren't THAT much money because I am coping. I have 11 and I gotta admit - we aren't rich! The essentials for guinea pigs are a BIG cage (to popcorn and run laps in), a water bottle, food bowl, dry food, a hidey house, and hay.

Guinea pigs do not smell if you clean the cage regularly. We have 2 guineas (they are social animals, can't have just one as it will pine) and the cages gets cleaned roughly every other day and complatly once a week. The Guineas cost £15 for the pair, the cage was £35, and I spend about £5 a week on fresh food, dry food, hay and bedding. We get them out every night to play with, and my son, for whom they were bought, got bored by Xmas and we only got them in September. Just as well that I love them to peices cos they are sooooooo cute. They can live up to 8 years old so bear in mind they are a long term commitment. Please rescue, or get from a small independant pet shop as opposed to pets at home.

Please use a shelter and not a breeder as many of the piggies come from breeders who's 'stock' "doesn't have the right colour or is not the right sex". These unwanted animals need a good caring home rather than lining the pockets of breeders or pet shops who's only agenda is profit and shifting 'stock'. Research more about guineas as there life span is anything from 5+ years and you don't want to get one if you are going to get bored after a few years or are off to college/uni and can't take it with you. As another person said get two for company as they are social creatures.

Perhaps they are aware that although you want a Guinea pig you may not be very good at looking after their welfare and there will be vet fees as well as proper food and bedding. Places for them to graze and run about safely out of doors, a good warm hutch during the winter months. They will need a lot of looking after.

don't nag them, because that will only show that you are too immature to care for a new pet anyway.

what you should do, is SHOW them you are responsible, and that you can complete a simple task (like cleaning the kitchen or vacuuming) daily. without them having to ask you.

then, you can ask them about a guinea pig. which by the way, DOES smell, and NEEDS to be cared for and played with EVERY DAY.

then, if you DO get one, show them that you can do as you have promised.

dont leave the care of this pet up to them, because they just did you a favor in letting you get one in the first place.

so YOU need to clean its cage, and YOU need to make sure it has food and water EVERY DAY.

otherwise, it dies, and you should never have a pet again.

Show them how you could breed guinea pigs, sell them, make a profit and give money back to your folks. Also show them how they could be kept and clean so there would be no smell. Basically, every reason they give you for no, give them a good reason to stop their fears. If it doesn't work, just say ok, but don't nag.

Guinea pigs are really cute but they are a LOT of work. You need to get them a big hutch to live in, and you need to change it every other day to keep them healthy.
You really need two - one on it's own will be lonely.
I would advise you not to get a guinea pig - a hamster is every bit as cute and about a tenth of the work and expense.
Good luck!

No, tell them you want a rare breed which are smaller and cheaper, and get yourself a rat instead. As long as you don't actually use the word rat they will be fine, and they make much better pets! And if you get girls and clean them out regularly, they won't even smell.
