28 Days Later and The Exorcist.
I watched them the same day with a friend in my basement and it was really dark out. We watched 28 Days Later first (I'm afraid of zombies) and it started raining in the movie at the same time as it did outside.
The Exorcist was a tape and the person who had it last didn't completly rewind it so we turned it on (the lights were still off in my basement) and it was at the exact part where Regan is full of blood and screaming "LOOK WHAT YOUR CATTY DAUGHTER DID!" I couldn't find the remote and we were both really shocked so I ran up to the TV and shut it. The person who previously had the tape did this on purpose ...we decided to watch it the next morning.

Halloween: In the first Halloween Michael Myers seemed more like a real person, but when the next Halloween movies came along the scary feeling kind of went away because it just started getting silly. In the original Halloween it could really happen. A guy escapes from a mental institute to kill his sister...that's some real life stuff. The music and little sounds on the movie added to the creepiness of Michael Myers and the story as a whole. I haven't seen another movie yet that can top it.

I don't know if it is the scariest of all time but my favorite horror movie is The Descent. The "bad guys" weren't introduced until toward the end of the film therefore you got to get to know the characters before they were basically picked off. The ending is kind of sad for me because I was looking for the whole happy everything is resolved conclusion. I loved the movie. Shutter, Ringu, and alot of Asian horror movies that I can't think of right now deserve honorable mentions though.

The Shining. That movie is sooooo scary. Jack Nicolson was brilliant. I still get scared watching the edited version on TV.

Gotta go with original Alien. Suspense is always scarier then gore.
When that flick was in the theaters, people were clawing the ceilings.
