It froze up and I turned it off manually by holding the on/off switch now it won't turn itself back on. If I press the on/off switch now it just turns on orange and stays that way, making no indications of trying to turn on (noises, activity shown on the internet router, nothing) I have unplugged it and then plugged it back in and still nothing. Im looking for some way to just get it back running so I can troubleshoot the problem but Im at a loss.

Sounds like your power supply unit is bad.

You could try to make sure your connections are good. You might also make sure that your power supply is cleaned out. Make sure the fans are unclogged. It might have overheated and shut itself down.

If your computer is under warranty, I would contact gateway. If not, you could take it to a shop. Probably 50-80 bucks to tell you something is wrong with it and another 60-120 for a decent powersupply.

PSU's are easy to change out. Usually the ones that come with a box machine are POS's anyway and it would be better to buy a new one and replace it yourself.

You should be able to download documentation from Gateway to help you too.

As someone who worked at Gateway as a Computer Technician fixing those cow chips that get called computers it could be one of three things. It could be 1) power supply, 2) motherboard, or 3) power control switch.

I would first replaced the power supply with an equivalent power supply. Make sure that the wattage of the new power supply is at least the size of the old power supply. Make sure that no other part is bad, plug in the power to you drives one at a time until all the drives are powered up

If that don't work, replace the motherboard because chances are the motherboard has a bad CMOS Chip. Dust accumulation and excess heat caused by poor circulation can damage CMOS chips fairly easy.

If this still does not work, than replace the power control (on/off) switch. The switch does not go bad that often but they do still go bad.

You're going to have to open up your case!

Don't be afraid, the idea here is that your PC is not starting the POST (Power On Self Test) sequence and that's because some piece of hardware connected to your motherboard is not functioning properly. If you don't feel comfortable doing this then you're going to have to take it to be serviced (maybe it's under warranty).

If you are comfortable, then you should

- reseat all the internal cards
- check the power connections and cable connections to all internal devices to make sure they are securely connected

Also, check your motherboard manual for what's called the "reset" switch, this is a jumper that when you change it from one poistion to another will reset your BIOS to factory defaults, which will often clear up POST problems.

Good luck

Your power supply might have gone bad. Contact Gateway if it's still under warranty and they can troubleshoot and send you a new one if necessary. If it's not in warranty, check Ebay and get one specifically for your model of computer.

to see if the power supply has gone bad plug it it to the laptop if you don't see any lights light up when you plug it in then it is probably bad, you could also get a volt meter and actually test it. In the event that it does work then it means that it is probably the power supply on the laptop, If you don't know anything about fixing a laptop I would suggest getting someone else to fix it for you
