My husband and I were just invited to attend his friend's newborn son's bris. The baby was just born on Monday. We are planning on attending (but not watching) and I just wondered about the etiquette: is this a gift giving occassion?

And if so, what gifts would be appropriate? Perhaps some vicodin? (just kidding)

I have been to two bris and I will have to do one when my son is born. It is immediate friends and family getting together and saying some prayers to the new baby and then everyone walks away or the moile will take the baby to another room and do it there. He numbs the area and also dips his finger in wine and coasts the baby's mouth.
I would bring a small gift like a photo book or a keepsake journal. You know how much $ you want to spend, I am assuming a good amount so just go to a higher end baby store and get a photo book and maybe a gift certificate. I saw some gifts from Tiffany's so it's whatever you want to spend. I think I spent like $25

I attended a bris for a friend of mine's son several years ago. I remember taking a small gift but I can't remember now what it was. I am thinking a sentimental gift such as a nice photo frame or album. Remember, it's the thought that counts and yoru friend will appreciate anything. Hopefully they invited you because they wanted you to share this occasion, not because of the gift you would possibly bring!

By the way, I didn't watch either. I did see my friend and her baby before the ceremony and he was sucking on a cotton swab that had been saturated in wine. I don't think it was too painful for him!

A small gift is appropriate. Anything you might give to a newborn child of friends under other circumstances would be fine, or here are some suggestions:

O goodness....a bris? Please don't tell me that's what I think it is......I'm glad I'm a girl....I think.... ;o)

Maybe a small stuffed animal.....he'll need something to hold on to for comfort.
