Coming home from work today I passed 3 different young men who spat on the ground. I beeped my horn at each of them and gave them a disapproving look :( Why does this disgusting habit now seem to be sociably acceptable?

Technically it is a crime. It was made illegal when there was a high level of turberculosis which could be passed on in mucus and saliva. With this disease becoming more common again it is a shame that enforcement of this law is not enforced more often. The manner in which so many people seem to think it is acceptable may well relate to the fact that a high proportion of professional footballers seem to be almost constantly spitting during matches which may well have popularised it with the feeble minded and easily influenced.

For Fat Tart's information, I've seen teenage girls do it too, which, in a way, is even worse.
It is a totally unnecessary, disgusting habit which, I suspect, young, impressionable people have picked up from sporting figures like footballers.
Another phenomenon which has always puzzled me occurs quite often in gents toilets. A lot of blokes, when having a pee, have to spit in the urinal at the end of their bladder emptying. Why is that? I never feel any urge to do it. It's weird.
As for your final point of it being socially acceptable - it certainly is not, except, perhaps, amongst the Great Unwashed.

It makes me feel ill and should be banned. If women don't do it then why should men. I heave when I see a green 'un on the pavement and cross the road to avoid it! I also detest footballers 'snotting' on the pitch; this is a relatively new disgusting habit. Take some hankies with you PLEASE, otherwise I think women should go around bleeding all over the place - what say you?

I totally agree with you, first of all. It's not only disgusting...it's unsanitary. I wasn't aware that it was socially acceptable...I think it's just a crude defiance of decency. It seems males feel it's being macho, along with burping, farting, and scratching their genitals, and proves their masculinity. I'd like to see a law against all of the above occurring on public property...not that that would prevent it from happening because breaking the law is also macho.
