Depends on what kinds of animals you like...I would say a dog...unless you do not want a lot of responsibility, then maybe some kind of fish (they are easy to take care of).

with this answer but a Hissing Cockroach is a wonderful pet if a person can only get over the word ROACH and the bristled legs. Hissing cockroaches cost nothing to feed. They break down fruits and vegetables into decaying matter(compost) very quickly and are very interesting to watch. A person never has to touch them if they don't wish to do so.
Have to pick an animal instead of a bug so the best animal as a pet would be a ferret. Ferrets are soft/cuddly/playful/ curious and aren't very big

Go to a park where other people have pets, walk around and see which animal or breed you are best attracted to. Go to the pound and do the same. A pet is much like a mate, choose well and you both will benefit, make the wrong choice, and you both will pay.

I had an Autrailian Brown Skunk once and he was an awesome pet. Low maintenance, very clean, fun to watch and he and I got pretty attached. Added benefit was his high shock value when he appeared to friends and neighbors. Another added value was that he loved to hunt bugs and spent most of his waking hours hunting. Drawbacks: rabies testing and shots were every three months (as I lived in an area of high rabies incidence and that he tended to be nocturnal. He would just be getting up when I got home from work. But I got used to that and we got along famously. I kept him indoors to avoid problems with cats, dogs and neighbors most of the time, but often I would take him to the back yard on a long leash, which he eventually learned to tolerate. Lots of fun, I been thinking about getting another one as of late. I would get another fixed male. They look like a local skunk except that they (at least this one) was a light brown (tan) with thin white stripes. Yes, he was deoderized also. You might be able to find one on line or in a local pet shop. Check with you city/county health department first though to make sure you can live with the restrictions or if they will allow you to have one.

A skunk?? LOL, In my folks building, Mum was on the elevator and got the shock to see a young woman holding a 'skunk' and feeding it cherries! Mum goes "uuuuhhh is that....ummm....still have the STINK SPRAY?"........Nope, had the operation to remove it, so she can keep it as a pet! Mum had to do like 4 looks to be sure she wasn't dreaming. Poor Mum...
Skunks are kewt but ain't kewl when they shoot their 'stinky scent' when they are accoasted by other animals or folks walking the wrong path..

that all depends on how much time you have to spend with them and on them. Dogs are good if but keep in mind you need to train them and house break them, vet bills/ Cats are good, they are pretty independent and you show them the cat box and they use it. They still need time and vet bills also and you still have to clean up after them. If you really do not have much time for animals I have to say that a fish is good but you still need to feed them and clean there tank. try to keep in mind when getting a pet how much time and money you can spend on them. It is not fair to them if you can not give them the Love and affection that they will show you in return.
Good Luck in finding your new best friend!
