They work a little the first time you hit them, but the pedal sinks right to the floor and the car won't stop. The following morning I noticed bright yellow fluid on the ground under the drivers' side wheelwell (not from under the hood, it was definitely off to the side.) Can anyone say if it's likely a line or the master cylinder based on this?

It's a 1995 mercury sable... and I feel far more educated knowing how quickly your braking power can just dissapear. SCARY!

well being a '95 its most likely the rubber brake line. over the years hot and cold weather maybe never being changed it probably just blew out on you. minor fix just make sure you bleed the system after you change it. best thing is to change both sides though, if this one failed the other is not that far behind. good luck.

It may be as simple as the flexible rubber brake hose to the front caliper.
Raise the vehicle & place on jack stands. Remove the wheel & inspect the area.

yes, it sounds like your brake line, bleeder valve, remove the wheel and look for leaks, if not sure have some one pump the brakes. i would wear eye protection you don't want brake fluid in your eyes
