Stay with xp if you like uncomplicated and familiar.
Go for Vista if you want latest best looking but complicated.
Ask the insurance company if you go for Vista will it be the ultimate edition. If they say no, then stick with XP. If they say yes Go for it. It retails around the £300 mark.

Have not heard anything good about vista bugs and things and lots of software does not work you are better to go for XP tried and tested. If you can find one vista seems to be on all the new laptops I keep seeing people buying XP to change back

Unless you are getting a laptop with enough RAM and a great processor (dual core or better) then i would get xp, Vista seems to run slower on my employees laptops. They on average have 1GB ram and 100G hard drive. The processor is AMD 2GHZ. Eventually you will need to get Vista but make sure you have a system that can support it.

A friend of mine bought a new Hewlet Packard desk top last month and wanted XP. Circut City told her she had to buy Vista and then charged an extra $159.00 to install Vista.

Stick with Windows XP. Vista is garbage. You will not like it at all.
Ideally, you should get a Mac.
