Bill Gates and Paul Allen started Microsoft. Their 1st product was a BASIC compiler for the ALTAIR microcomputer. They were in discussion with IBM for providing their compiler for the PC when they heard that IBM was also looking for an OS. They knew of a company (Digital Research) who had an OS but were in need of capital, they obtained the rights to the OS and modified it to work on the 8088 CPU that was going to be used in the IBM-PC. Gates was shrewed when he made sure that the BASIC compiler was included in the BIOS of every IBM-PC. He got a chunk of cash whenever an IBM PC was sold whether it had an OS or not.

People forget Apple was an established major company when MS was just a small startup.
Again hard to think like this now, but at that time, the hardware was the major issue. Not like today where the computer brand is not that important.
Bill Gates started MS from nothing and was able to recognize that owning the defacto standard operating system would be very valuable.
