i think people generalise things because it's convenient for their arguments.
When someone generalises something, it's either that he's ignorant and relies on generalised assumptions to make his point, or that he's choosing to ignore a certain point in his argument that could turn the tables on him.
I once knew of someone who liked to speak generally, but pointed to key factors (i.e. going into details) when generalised points were not in his favour. Two-faced, i know. But that's what people do to win arguments. Generalise.
