I think it is mainly the fact people can't see, it's like with death, many fear it as we have never experienced it so we don't know what to expect, I think it's similar to the dark you can't see what around you so you don't know what to expect. Than of course, with children, they begin to imagine what might be there and it frightens them even more. If you know what I'm getting at.
