It's a mathematical fact that Friday the 13th
must occur at least once and no more than 3
times in any given year. If the 13th of the
month falls on Friday, the first must be on Sunday.
To find out when the first falls on Sunday, note that there are 14 different types of calendar year. Check a good atlas
to see when this can happen for each type of
calendar year.

I would think it happens between two to four times a year. We have 52 weeks plus two days. Also, for a person who gets paid every 14 days it results in a 3rd paycheck in a month every 4 months. So, while I have not calculated it out, I'd believe that we'd get a Friday the 13th every four months.
