Preferably without driving on the Interstate at all.

Okay, I don't want to drive on I-80 or I-90 because I'm not accustomed to the Interstate and getting in a wreck because my pickup doesn't willingly go over 60 except under extreme duress is not what I want for my trip. I should have specified Driving Route because I have stuff I need to take with me and Amtrak charges a fee for extra luggage, right? So does Greyhound. So, what's the best route to Drive from Omaha to San Francisco that doesn't involve a major Interstate?

Wow.

I am a Native of North Omaha, and made the treck back to live San Jose (again) with parents, as we hit the road back in 1991 after living in Omaha for 2 years.

I-80 takes you straight through to downtown SF. Any other route extends your trip by days.

Otherwise, your trip wouls till encompass I-29, to I-40 in which you would be going way out of the way. I cannot think of any other way around the interstate. The trek would be dreadfully long.

Amtrak! They have a direct train between the two cities and it's one of the best train rides in the world as far as views! Otherwise, not using the interstate would make no sense what so ever since I-80 is a direct interstate between the two.

well..unfortunately high way 80 is the most convenient, direct route to SF. It goes right through omaha and directly into SF where it dead ends on the west coast. If you want to avoid it, take amtrak.
