Only if you put him in an established tank with no other male betta's. If you add another fish to "his" tank, he will eventually kill it. Also, make sure the other fish do not have fancy tails like the betta or he will nip at them.

Most of these people are wrong.
Most male Betta's are not agressive, unless there is another betta in the same tank. Females are very agressive.
You can place a betta in an established tank with no worries.
The only thing is, they are kind of timid around other types of fish, and can get nipped if placed with agressive fish. They also will develop ick faster than the other fish, that's why you introduce them last, so they don't stress when a new fish is added.

I have 3 tanks with many tetras, shrimp, catfish, and plecostimus's. Each tank has a Betta and they are fine, and get along with everyone.

Also, the chinese plecostimus is a very agressive fish, it's probably the one starting the fights with the betta. there are many more non agressive plecostimuses.

Despite popular beleief most male bettas are very peacful and kind fish. I have my Betta in a tank currently with a school of neon tettras. He is just like a baby - when i feed the fish the tettras gobble up all the food and the betta just sits there looking at them like 'hey you gonna give me a chance to have some'. After the neons are done i give my betta some pellets and he finally gets achance to eat. Some times the neons will try to steal a pellet to play with though. All in all though they all get along awsome - my betta is much happier to have some friends then living alone.

Most of these people are completely wrong. A Male Betta will not only ignore fish up to 10 smaller than them (nothing small enough to fit in their mouths, of course) but they will only show slight aggression to fish that nip at them (they'll just nip back) and of course, other Bettas including males and females.

My Betta doesn't even pay attention to other long-finned fish like my fancy goldfish.

It wouldn't really make a difference to your Betta if he was alone of with other fish but I'd like to think that he'd get lonely or bored so i'd put him with others. Try putting him with some small colorful fish like long-finned Danios or neon Tetras. They do well together in larger tanks because they just ignore each other and go on with their lives. Larger fish like Swordtails might, and probably will, nip at their tails. No harm done though, but if you can avoid it, do.

Actually it's quite the opposite. A male betta will do fine with any other smaller peaceful fish OTHER than another betta.

I have a male betta fish and it lives in a five gallon tank with two other fish and some snails. They all get along fine!

YES!! as long as the fish are around the same size, or if they are smaller, they will go great if you add them to a tank. bettas are only territorial when they are with bettas or bigger more threatening fish. i have my betta in with 5 neon tetras 5 cardinal tetra 5 black neon tetra, 5 glass cats a pleco and a couple snails.. and he is the center piece!!

Male betta's can be hard to keep in large tanks for this purpose exactly, they are very dominant and will kill most other fish, male or female. They shouldn't be kept with other male betta's and should only be put with a female for breeding purposes.

Mollies, Catfish, African Grey Frogs, loaches and Amano Shrimp make good tank mates, granted they live in a tank of 10 gallons or more.

Also make sure you give a male betta a plant or castle to defend, especially when he has no take mates.

Male Bettas will fight to the finish with any other male fish. Even with a female, they are only interested in mating and can kill the female in the process. He doesn't want a companion, only domination! He will be happy all by himself.
