I think we may have been down graded to "highly influential". The dollar is in decline, the economy is barely afloat and our military can no longer say they have the best readiness rate in the world. Sciences are being over taken by India, Japan, China, PAKISTAN. We really don’t have much to brag about even our mighty Boxers and Basketball players are being trumped by Russians.
So is the US run over, will we go the way of Russia?

For the retired Army Guy...Why our economy may be failing
1. Huge trade deficit
2. Large federal Deficit
3 Gigantic National Debt
4. Rapidly devaluing currency
5. Fluctuations in gold prices
6. Smaller total labor force yet larger total population
7. Key indicators of inflation
8. The Fed not raising interest rates
9. I would go on and on, this is not a dooms day story, its the truth, the housing slump, the death of industry in Detroit, free trade, wake up RETARMY GUY...The economy is ABOUT to start shrinking, although I will admit, up to now it has shown small growth but that growth no longer translates to wealth for American citizens...Keep your eyes open and invest in GOLD

I can give you the European perspective.
If anything, people consider the U.S. as an even stronger Super Power because it is not held in check by the Soviets. The United States is the big guy on the block, and there are no rivals.
The U.S. military is the best large military in the world, by far. Israel has a strong military and good technology, but no one can match the U.S. When other nations have offered America their help, the U.S. has had to decline the offer because American technology is so far ahead of everyone else that it would be like indians with a bow and arrow offering to help a man in a machine gun turret.
Education is the weak point of the United States right now. However, the best universities are still there, so the brightest people are still U.S.-educated.
The dollar's value has eroded a bit on its own, but the American government has purposely kept its value low to aid American exports.
All in all, America is in good shape.

Yeah were rotting like the romans did an unless we do something quick were going to break up and get run over by our metaphorical barbarians. The best thing I can think of is raising a tarrif and building industry again we can last much longer as a consumer nation we need start building our own stuff again. Were heading for hard times mates but if have to go through them either way so we should do it head first and with open eyes not pretending its not going to happen.
First things first try to find ways to become energy efficent so we dont send all our money to the middle east then starting building subsidied industry. Then raise a tariff on foriegn goods to help our industry and help our government pay back the 350 billion dollars we owe asia. Oh and pull out of the rest of the world and stop sending every other country aid too.

Do you still think the world looks at the United States as a Super Power?
Yes. The kind of hatred directed at the US is reserved for great powers. You can't blame all the world's ills on anything less than the world's sole super power.
So is the US run over, will we go the way of Russia?
It's nearing the end, yes, but you could hope it goes the way of Great Britain - fading away rather than collapsing.

Dollar in decline, economy barely afloat LOL Where do you get your information from LOL Pullllleeeze! We have more than enough to brag about!
PS. Abnormal, you two are killing me LOL and in what way is our economy collapsing, please thrill me with your acumen LOL
You said it, why it "MAY" be, those are your opinions, but as of right now, numbers don't lie. Weve been in worse shape in our countries history and there wasn't a catastrophic collapse because of it, but there are things as far as national debt we need to get under control, and plan to eliminate. Our system isn't a prefect one, but even though you didn't mention his name, I could see by your list that your just Bush Bashing. Let us not forget, we where handed a war nobody was planning for or wanted. Thats right, bush didnt want it either as much as the shtick here is that he did. He grew the size of the government (DEPT. Homeland security) A huge expense. Is paying for a war, we have, and will, and I say this for both parties, get the things in place we need to straighten it out one way or another.

I don't think The good old U.S of A is all it was. Its a shade of its former glory now, and like you pointed out, the dollar is losing its place as a largely used form of currecny, our economy is collapsing. My own opinion is that this is largely due to poor presidency(Bush) and that if this keeps up, and the United States is internally rotting, slowly becoming like russia. Soon our accomplishments will be eclispsed by the much more economically successful Japanese and Chinese, and the russians beating us athletically. its a sorry state we're in.

I live in Canada, and we tend, in general to be a bit more in touch with the rest of the world than most Americans. (I grew up in the States, and my brothers and sisters still live there). Most of the world these days seems to view the US as a bully who tries to throw their weight around. Not much difference between Dems and Reps, except Dems tend to be far more responsible economically (in recent decades, at least). the dollar is in decline as a direct result of the economic policies of the current regime - rob from everyone and give to the rich, and spend trillions on invading oil-rich Iraq. Sure, you deposed a brutal dictator. But there are lots of those around - Burma, Myanmar, Indonesia, North Korea just to name a few places - and the US either leaves them alone or actively supports them. One has to ask why they chose Iraq's dictator as their whipping boy. Geopolitics (keeping their one ally in the mid-east viable) and oil are the reasons, not any noble attempt to inflict "democracy" at the point of a gun.
It's too early to count the US empire out just yet, but it does show lots of signs of internal decay, just like every empire that's preceded it. Watch out for the Asian economic powers, that's where the 21st century is heading.

It's looking that way, but I think we will pull out of this mess as soon as we have a president that is not named Bush.
