It was about a young man that lived in a town at the foot of a mountain and people from the mountain would come down and shop there. He saw a beautiful young woman come down and decided to find out who she was. He went to her families 2 room shack with no running water and no bathroom etc. He asked her father for permission to court her. The book tells about her family and others on the mountain. There is a little old man who lives in a shack with his wife who is so fat she can't get out the door and when she died they had to take the wall out of the side of the shack to get her out. They buried her in a piano box she was so big !!!!! He ended up marrying this young woman and she got pregnant and died in childbirth. !!! It was so sad !!!! Does this ring a bell anyone?

OHHHHH I think know what it is, I think it's "The Pearl" by John Steinback. Does that sound like the book you read? That's the only title I can think of that sounds like it.

Never mind, I just read through rest of the summary, the ending was different in "The Pearl" than what you described.

I can't think of any other titles.

Sounds like several different stories I have read over time rolled into one. What you need to to is post this question with the Librarian at the Library of Congress' website at: loc.gov. If it was written somewhere and published, they have it at the Library. You will get a title, author and a brief synopsis of the book in answer to your question. This is the best research site I have ever found for books or any literary items.
