Sounds like a Throw Out Bearing, means clutch job, you riding that thing??? Keep your foot off that clutch petal except when you got to shift. You probably looking at a big repair bill.
BUT, if you are lucky, maybe only an adjustment (doubt if you will really be that lucky).

Assuming it isn't a squeaky pedal and it happens when you depress the pedal, it's probably the thrust bearing. A mechanic should be able to tell you very easily just by listening. Snag is, it involves dismantling the clutch, so you might as well have that replaced at the same time if it's anywhere near done. The parts are cheap, the labour's the thing, so make use of it!

Hi
This sounds very much like the release bearing giving up the ghost.
If the release bearing is part of the clutch assembly and not behind an end cap on the gearbox, then you may aswell fit a 3 piece clutch kit because the gearbox has to come off anyway.
Cheers

from your description it is probably the thrust bearing which is idle until you put your foot onto the clutch pedal good news is that a thrust bearing is quite cheap , bad news is that it is the same work involved to change the complete clutch
depending on age and milage of car either ignore it until it gets really bad or change the whole clutch mechanism , at least then you know the clutch is good for 100k miles average cost of changing a clutch I would estimate around £300 depends how much the car is worth

More than likely it is not your clutch but your throwout bearing. These are a common wear and tear item. Typicaly a new throwout will only cost about $18-35, the installation is the expensive part because of the fact that you have to drop the tranny to get to it. This can run as much as $1000-1500 depending on the vehicle and the garage.

Not so much the clutch, but the thrust bearing. When you put your foot on the clutch pedal the bearing hits the pressure plate and if it not to healthy it will make a grinding noise.\
Depends on how old your car is, it should not be too expensive to fix. But if your clutch has gone,, then hey start saving.
Hope it helps.

Noise only when the clutch pedal is depressed is probably the release bearing. The transmission will have to be removed to replace it. At that time the clutch can be inspected to determine if it needs to be replaced also.

Firstly you'll have to check for the Clutch PEDAL and find out whether it needs greasing or not and secondly and most importantly the problem could be Clutch PLATES.If it is the clutch plates problem then you'll have to get it changed as soon as possible mate!

Johnboy is correct.Your throwout bearing is the culprit.Since the transmission/transaxle needs to come out anyhow you would be money ahead to have the clutch replaced as well. It won't be cheap, however.

Most likely it's the release bearing that is grinding. While you are in there it's the best time to replace the clutch, pressure plate, release bearing, & have the flywheel resurfaced.
