I have a friend who is setting up a portal about cats. It has listings to cat furniture, vocal vet listings, forum, pet contests, etc...

I'd say try to find a domain name that's catchy and gimmicky, so that it'll stick in people's heads and spread by word of mouth.
Some suggestions:
www.catsmart.com (kinda hints at PetSmart)
www.cattycorner.com (play on words of "kitty corner")
www.kittentales.com
www.cattales.com
www.catcollage.com (collage of cats... I dunno)
