Good question but I don't have an answer. It's true though. I remember all the words of the songs and most of the dialog. Weird. I even met one of the Lollipop League at our county fair in 2006. He's the only one left able to travel. I sang that darn song for days afterwards.

Beyond everything else that everyone has brought up, it was astounding cinematically as well. This was the first motion picture to be filmed in color. For that time, it was incredible. It's like the way we looked at CG for the first time or movies like Star Wars, The Matrix or LOTR. These challenged our thought processes but more than that were visually stimulating beyond anything we'd experienced to that point. It was a ground breaking film on so many levels and will not soon be forgotten.

The Sound of music-the 1st action picture I ever observed in a theater. Very moving tale. prominent classic-The Graduate. Dustin Hoffmans first action picture and has a twist on the top Sibling opposition with Kirsty Alley-won't in any respect overlook the final line of that action picture. do no longer desire to smash it for you. One Flew over the Coocoos Nest is so authentic to existence in state psychological hospitals of that era and additionally has a excellent ending. yet another prominent from years in the past is easy Rider with Peter Fonda. those have been all made whilst Hollywood honestly made some solid movies. do no longer watch lots of something they are making on the instant.

It was the conversion from black and white to color, right in your eyes. Plus many people like the suspense of not knowing what's next, hoping for a happy ending. Was he a true wizard or not (NOT) life not that simple. Never really liked the ending.

Actually, since 1939. It is a classic because it was the first musical fantasy movie. A children's story that was big budget, with great songs, superb acting, great dance sequences, and a definite point to the story with a lesson learned.

I think Judy Garland has a lot to do with it. She was extremely talented and charming actress.

The story is a classic tale of looking inside yourself to find what you need, but in a less talented actresses hands I think it may have been annoying.

Imagine an Olsen twin..... Ack.

First, it has a great cast. Second, Judy Garland was loved by most everyone. The movies appeal led to all ages, with humor, sadness, scary moments, and sense of what will happen next.

Perhaps because they play it on tv two or three times a year? Or maybe because it came out when color film was not possible and the people who put this together actually created the color by painting each and every piece of film.

I see it as an archetypal story ... good and evil... the hero's quest (even though the heroine is a little girl)... and the jump from B&W to color was a big deal back in the day.

It's a story that is timeless, stuff legends are made of.
