Vedic astrology is based upon Nakshatras or Constellations that are 27 in numbers, hence Indian astrology is also known as Nakshatra Shastra. These 27 constellations occur in the 12 zodiac signs, each zodiac sign having two and a quarter Nakshatra. One nakshatra is further divided into four equal parts. One nakshatra's arc is of 13 degrees and 20 minutes and this multiplied by 27 makes the complete circle of 360 degrees zodiac.

The position of the Moon at birth in any of the twelve zodiac signs is called the Rashi or the Moon sign of the person. But the Moon's position in a particular nakshatra is of utmost importance for making predictions for an individual. This is even more important in India due to the prevailing system of matching the horoscopes of the boy and girl before arranging their marriage.

The ancient seers observed that the birth under certain nakshatras bring misfortune to the individual and for girls this unfortunate yoga adversely affected their marital life. Hence these yogas were termed Vish-Kanya, or unfortunate girls. It could be the male bias that this adverse combination of the Moon and a particular nakshatra was given a female terminology because even the boys born under these adverse yogas suffer equally.

Small girls used to be chosen to grow into a vish- kanya. They were given poisons in small quantities first. Gradually larger quantities of poison/ venom would be given. Since it was a gradual process, their bodies could take it without untoward effects.

But their blood and tissues would be having poison that was lethal to other humans. Once they became full fledged vish- kanyas, they were used by kings to destroy enemies. If they bit someone and through the wound their saliva entered the other person's body, it was sure death.

The myth states that girls were made immune to snake poison by exposing them to low intensity snake bites at a very young age. Many girls used to die but the ones who had developed the immunity to venom would survive. The blood and other body fluids of these girls would apparently be "poisoned" and sexual contact with them would kill the person.

If we try to find a rational explanation for this, one possibility is that these girls after having developed the immunity to snake-venom could have poisonous snakes as pets (as their bite would not harm them). These girls could then smuggle in poisonous snakes with them and use them to kill off someone.

Chanakya is known to have "diverted" a Vish-kanya originally sent to Chandragupta Maurya by Nanda's minister Rakshasas to king Parvatak who was plotting against Maurya. The vish-kanya poisoned and murdered Parvatak and Maurya was saved. My feeling is that vish-kanyas were skilled snake charmers and were able to handle and use poisonous snakes.
