My 11th & 12th grade English teacher, Mrs. Simmons, told me that I should look around. Based on the types of people who knew me and called me their friend, I should know that I was a pretty good person. I still judge myself by that criteria. I have awesome, wonderful, caring, giving friends so I must be a pretty good person.

Just b4 summer vacation, my teacher had told us that a lot of people drown because they start screaming for help and more water gets in their body. Sure enough, that summer, while on vacation, I had fallen in a fast moving stream. What did I do? Started screaming for help. As I was swallowing a lot of water, her words came into my mind. So I shut the heck up and instead of fighting the current, I went down-stream while working my way across to the shore.
Her advice may have saved my life.

See my other answer. But to expound on that, the best advice my favoite teacher gave me, not in so many words, was that any wall that surrounded me was of my own making.
If I could build it, I could take it down. And take it down I did.
I owe that woman more than I can ever express.

My sixth grade teacher taught me about selflessness and that was the best lesson I've been taught so far in life.
