It is in the cabbage family and has a mild cabbage flavor. Very good raw in a salad or cut up and eater with a dip. They have leave that look like cabbage and the edible part is above ground. They are best when eaten young and about the size of a tennis ball or smaller. They tend to get "woody" when older.

It's a root vegetable and can be bought at most grocery stores. If I can find it here in Alaska then you should have no problem in the lower 48. And it's yummy!

I think you mean Kohlrabi, yes it is a vegetable.
I like it raw with vegie dip.
