Capital Punishment, why should it be brought back into Canada, I mean if they did something wrong sure they should be punished for it, but the death penilty isn't that a little harsh?

No, it's not harsh. It's very appropriate. If someone does something to win a ticket to ride the lightning, by all means, let them. (For those who don't know, "ride the lightning" is a term used to refer to the act of execution in the electric chair.)

Several Canadians have asked this today. Apart from your own reaction about the harshness of the death penalty, I think that Canada can learn from the experience of the United States with the death penalty before deciding. Here is some of what we have learned, sourced and verifiable-

The death penalty costs much more than life in prison.

The death penalty risks executing innocent people (123 already exonerated) and DNA is available in less than 10% of all homicides. It is not a guarantee against the execution of innocent people.

The death penalty is not a deterrent. Most killers do not even think they will be caught (if they think at all). Homicide rates are higher in states with the death penalty.

Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. Supermax prisons are terrible places to spend the rest of your life.

The death penalty can be very hard on families of murder victims.

The death penalty does not apply to the worst of the worst. It applies to defendants with the worst lawyers.

48% of Americans prefer life without parole and 47% prefer the death penalty. We are learning. Eye for an eye judgments may sound good but they do not make sense.

Yes . Why keep some one who may reofend. If robert Pickton is found guilty he will spend 23 hours a day in a small cell. eating better than most of us.. If a convicted killer gets out will you hire him?In case you dont know picton is on trial for killing several women. He is a pig farmer dont ask about the bodies. i also feel 2nd ofence for a violent crime Game over.

I don't think it is too harsh, because if you let someone out into the world after they kill someone, don't you think they will do it again. but hey jail isn't that bad anymore, i think the death penalty is a good thing because it is better than other people dieing.

It works really well in the United States. Most States have it legalized and we don't have any murder here. Canada on the other hand is full of vermin.

Aye, it should be. I think n'er do wells should quake in fear for their offenses. oviously, if someone steals they shouldn't be slapped in the ol' sapien shocker, but murderers, heck, even rapists, should know that theres worse then lifetime imprisionment.
