My xj600n use to suddenly take off at 8k revs and have this release of power, but now it has gone. I dont thrash it, but it came in useful when over taking.

1. Check the fuel filter in the petrol tank, if it is at all clogged then you will be suffering from fuel starvation.
2. Check the spark plug gaps and the tip colours as you will get a weak spark if they are too wide or faulty.
3. Check that the air filter in the air box is not blocked or dirty.
4. Check that the carburettors are balanced, using a decent set of balancing gauges or get a decent mechanic to do it for you.
5. Check the valve clearances.
6. Check the valve timing as the timing chain may be worn.
7. If the bike has burned oil in the past then the exhaust may be a bit clogged, creating too much back pressure and strangling the engine.
Failing all of those then get it checked by a competent mechanic.

--Always give "year", "make", engine size and model # when asking questions. The mileage of your bike would have been helpful.
--Could be low on compression - check it.
--The valves may be leaking (carbon build-up due to high mileage and low rpm running) - perform a "leak down" test.
--Valve clearances tighten up from hard riding (high revs) and cause the valves to leak - check the valve clearances.

Sounds like valve clearance to me.

You've probably got a valve tightening up.
