jacob's ladder: tim robbins' character jacob died in vietnam; the entire series of experiences turns out to have been a dying hallucination. jacob's experiences appear to have been a form of purgation in which he releases himself from his earthly attachments. at the end of the movie, he joins his dead son gabriel to ascend a staircase toward what we are lead to believe as heaven. at the end, we also learn that the u.s. army allegedly experimented with an hallucinogenic drug called bz (which would obviously explain jacob's hallucinations), but the pentagon denies it.

never saw donnie darko.

Jacob's Ladder was about Tim Robbin's character being tormented after he fought in Vitenam (I think, can't remember for sure). Basically I got that he thought he was going crazy because of all of the hallucinations he was having, when it was really a side effect from some type of nerve gas he inhaled during the war called The Ladder, I think. It's been a while since I saw the movie, so I can't remember details.

It's been a while since I saw Donnie Darko, too. I couldn't help you with that movie even if I saw it right now because I was confused about it as well. It was pretty creepy and cool, though!
