Cumulonimbus clouds are basically the clouds responsible for the development of thunderstorms. They develop when there is low level moisture, a very unstable atmosphere with depth and a trigger mechanism.

Trigger mechanisms include frontal systems, mountains, sea breeze convergence or any scenario which helps lift the moist air from the surface.

In order to get an unstable air mass you need warm low levels (say surface to 850 hPa) and cold mid to high levels (say 700-400 hPa).
If there is an inversion in the middle levels, then the rising air will be become cooler than the surrounding air and therefore will sink again. This will keep the cloud as a cumulus cloud rather than the larger cumulonimbus cloud.

these clouds are clouds that form a "stack" (AKA columns). u will mainly see them in front of a low pressure system. low pressure systems cause storms. when u see these clouds, later on there will be a SUPER CELL. the higher the "stack" is the worse the storm will be. if u see the top of the cumulonumbus cloud and there is a "ancor" (clouds that are thin and moving away from the cumulonumbus cloud) the worse the super cell will be. this is caused becuase the cloud has "hit" the Troposphere and storms ONLY form in this tropo. (this is where WE live). Hail and Tornadoes usually form in these circumstances. Hope This Helped! God Bless♥

They form when there is a strong convection current with enough moisture. The convection current may be due to frontal systems, low pressure areas and lot of moisture entering from the sea over a hot land.
