what is a "tang" and what do you use to cover a tang at the end of a file befor you use it?

You answered your own question, it's the end of the file that a handle slides onto. You have to go to a hardware supply place and buy a file handle to put on the tang.

I don't use anything but it would be nice to put a file handle on it. Makes things easier to handle. Good luck.

PS Harware store and home improvement stores will carry them.
