How about a tattoo also? And an embedded chip? And a welded ankle bracelet? And a slave collar?

We're already required to show a Social Security card to get a job. All that other stuff would be just for show. The government already owns us, they don't need to rub it in.

"All men are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights"...unless they lose their paperwork - then they are non-persons.

To Alan S. I believe in absolute good and evil. I believe the fundamental nature of humans & of the universe dictates one rule of morality, which could be phrased as the Libertarian Credo or the Christian Golden Rule. I believe Jesus was a great philosopher. But I don't believe in God, I believe in evolution, but not as the source of morality. Morality comes from people appying reason to experience to discover the nature of humans & the universe, thereby learning that Jesus was right about the Golden Rule. Nevertheless, "all men are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights" has deep meaning, even for an agnostic such as myself.

If this happens, the terrorist win.

Hell No - 911 was sad don't get me wrong. But it was the opportunity that the government was looking for to clamp down 'for our best interest'. BTW, The Indians got screwed. Not up to date on the tribal ID card, BUT, if I had enough Indian blood in me I'd get one to prove I'm not just another American transplant. Update: Just read a little on tribal ID card's. They are issued by the tribes as forms of ID to be used on the reservations. They are 'internal' ID's that are designed to keep 'non-Indians' out of reservations and prove the person has the rights of a Native American Indian. Many US governmental agencies don't even accept then as proper ID.

I do not think there should be a MANDATORY national ID card. If I could carry one card which would be my equivalent to a passport, drivers license, social security card, birth certificate, and voter ID card all in one, I would get one in a heart beat. I don't think it should be mandatory though.

Anything other than a card such as tattoos, chips, or bracelets I am totally against.

1 - Yup - but only if it were to be used for constructive purposes (and I can think of a WHOLE LOT of 'em!).

2 - No - they're icky!

3 - Is there a reliable system on the market yet? (I don't think so.)

4 - Those are for jailbirds. (But then you knew that, didn't you, you old fox, you!)

5 - Naw - everyone knows there are no more slaves in the US.

No, you do not have to show a SS card to get a job. I lost mine in 1969 and have never been asked to show one since then.

You're required to show a Social Security Card because your employer is required to make matching payments. Social Security Cards are not ID cards and a national ID card would be unconstitutional.

The foundind fathers limited the power of the Goverment. It's the stupid idea of Bush and his buddiesto find terrorist. Why don't we send his daughters to Iraq if he supports the war so much?

I know it's a novel concept, but we already have a national ID card. It's your SS card. If you don't have one, you shouldn't be here. If you don't have a number, you're gone. I don't care where you go, you're gone.

Seriously. Stop making laws, enforce the ones on the books...

No.
But you have made me remember that our founders did accept and acknowledge that we were "created" not spawned in some primordial soup or a petri dish, as taught in our public school system.

You should be happy that you're an American. Maybe you should spend some time in another country that doesn't have the luxuries we have and then come back and let us know how you feel about things.

Technically, the government is us, it represents us. The government is us binding ourselves. In essense, it makes sure we aren't too much better than other people.
