Carpeting is the source of most offending dust. If you can afford to pull carpeting and have wood or laminate floors, you'll see an immediate drop in the amount of dust. Otherwise, vacuum thoroughly everyday.
Air purefiers are also a good investment. Make sure you get one that washes clean, not one with a paper filter. The ones that you can remove the filter and wash it with warm water are a blessing. That let's you clean them out every week, especially during peak dust seasons (spring and fall).
If you have a central heating/cooling system in your house, get a recleanable filter for that, too. Make sure you clean it every month and vacuum out the adjacent areas.
When you clean, use a vacuum on drapes and blinds, as well as on ceiling fan blades. The worst thing you can do is just push the dust around.
Instead of using fabric softener sheets, use the new anti-static balls or liquid fabric softener. The fabric softener sheets actually create more lint in the fabrics and will cause more dust in your house.
Once or twice a year, hook up a vacuum bag and a shop vac or water vac (like a Rainbow vac) to your mattresses and suck out all the dust mites building up in your mattresses. There's research from allergists showing the average mattress gains 10 pounds in dust mite weight over 5 years. Think about how gross it is in there. The other thing you can do is get a latex or rubber organic mattress instead of a foam mattress. That makes a huge difference on the dust mite population.

I agree with Mary G: Get your ducts and the filters to your furnace and AC cleaned. That should cut out a lot of your dust problem.
In addition to the regular cleaning, you might even want to invest in an air cleaner to pull the dust out of the air. Especially if you live in an area that's prone to dust.
Good luck!

I have that problem. I live in an Apartment that does not vent the dryer to the outside. I have one of those dryer vents hooked up to a little box you fill with water. I have to make sure that there is fresh water in the box before each load that I dry, otherwise the place is filled with dust. That may or may not be your problem. Check your dryer vent, air filter and air ducts and make sure they are clean. If you live on or near a dirt road, keep your windows closed as much as possible.

You might want to get your ducts cleaned at least once a year. If there is dust in them, it just keeps getting blown around your house when the furnace comes on.
Good Luck

Like 75% of dust is actually dead skin. So, I think even if you cleaned your vents and put filters in place and basically make it pretty air tight, you would still have "dust".
