Okay, I'm 15 and am thinking of my future. I'm not very good in math and my teacher said I would have problems getting the "good job". So I was thinking about getting a back-up plan. I already thought of being a writer because I'm really good in writing English and essays.

I watched the discovery channel just now and I saw a documentary of gamers who make it big, earning big cash and becoming famous and stuff. Some of them even win $300 000 in a gaming competition.

So i was thinking of being in the gaming industry. I'm also very good in gaming and computer. My questions are:
1. What are some jobs that got something to do with games and computer?
2. What are some of the online games that are used in these kind of game competition?
3. What do I need to have to get those jobs (degrees, masters, whatever, etc)?
4. Simple question how DO I get those jobs and getting in those competition?
5. Not really a question but when you answer, please give the job with a good pay..

Thanks

I didn't say I want a job now.

I said "I was thinking of my future".

Anyway, thanks in advance...

1. There are plenty of jobs out there. You don't have to just be a game tester. You can be a programmer, quality assurance, audio, graphic design, concept artist, etc. The list goes on. www.gamasutra.com for some good stuff.

2. Online games that are used in competitions? Halo 2, Battlefield 2, Counter-Strike: Source, to name a few. Mostly first-person shooters lately.

3. Study. There are many schools out there that have gaming degrees. I, myself, am taking classes to get my bachelor's degree in Game Software Development. I go here: www.westwoodonline.edu

4. Do a lot of research. You got to know people, and you have to know your stuff. A degree will help you in getting the jobs, and getting to competions, you need to be GOOD.

5. Job with good pay? Average pay for a game programmer is $80,000 per year. That's just under $40/hour, by the way.

Hope this helped

You are only 15, and by the way your writing is awesome.

First of all if your math teacher says that you will have a difficult time getting the "good Job" he/she has done you a great disservice. Ignore what he said.

Math is all about practice, just as if you are training for a sport. Don't give up on math and practice, practice. Homework is practice. So do more than given.

Next about gaming yes there are great careers in it. Infact many top universities are setting up degree areas in it.

Right Now download gamemaker from gamemaker.com It's free and it's free of virus's. Try it out. Don't get frustrated it's not easy at first but once you get the hang of it, it is an awesome start.

Next once you get the hang of that, mow some lawns over the summer and earn enough to get carrera or poser 6 so you can get a feel for 3d. As you gain confidence start playing around with c++ programing.

Don't let anyone tell you what your future will be. Only you can determine your future. Make smart, safe choices and all you want will be yours.

Well, I not sure of pay. But, if you like to write you may be able to write a Cheat Book on a Game. Let's say for example WOW; you now it well and write a simple book/booklet not large maybe 100 pages softcover. If, it sell for $5 you may get $1. If, 100,000 people buy your book, you made $100,000. But, let's hope 1 million people buy your book and then you can retire and play games the rest of your life.
Many people have done things like this. You could even write a simple pamphlet on the "pros and cons of the educational values of gaming" and sell your pamphlets to Pueblo, Colorado.
I try to find you the link.
Here the link;
http://pueblo.gsa.gov/
You may have to contact them to find how you can submit a pamphlet.
I remember a friend seen a classified in a magazine and it was $5 to learn how to make easy money. He say, it was probably a scam, but, sent the guy $5 to see what would happen. He received a pamphlet on how to write pamphlets and where to sell them.
Back in the 70's when gas prices went up a man made a killing on a pamphlet about building a still to make Ethanol/Alcohol for cars. When interviewed he said; "The information is readily available at the library, but, it too hard for people and they were willing to buy the pamphlet".

1. Programming, design, graphics, mechanics, plot, sound etc. Computer could go on for awhile though.

2. Counter-strike, RTS and FPS mostly. (Command & Conquer, Doom, etc)

3.Im Twelve I don't know, probaly be really good at ICT, Computer graphics, Computer Mechanics, being very good at games, MATH (Yes you need it).

4.Competitions often require sign-ups or pre-test to see your skills, and you need to make sure you can be there. Get hired or create your own game (A hard task that requires a large budget).

5. The pay obviously depends on your job and you.

Gaming competitions are extremely hard you win the large money in world wide competitions mostly (So I can't recommend such a job).

Dream on!
A competition, yes, U can participate.
But a full job at 15...don't know....
And is not easy to be a gamer. U don't play a game as usual. In fact u have to find bugs of games before they are released on market. And u have to describe the bugs where u have found them and blah, blah,..
It is very hard because U have to work with your eyes in the computer many hours, u know...and it isn't payed quite thet much.

Reconsider....
