Have you heard the news story about some moronic kid who advertised a party on her Myspace page, then wondered why her house got trashed? http://www.mg.co.za/articlepage.aspx?area=/breaking_news/other_news/&articleid=304692

What really annoys me is that the idiot parents called it "house rape". HOUSE RAPE???!!! Yeah, right. That's got to be the stupidest phrase I have ever heard. Trivialising a serious crime like rape like that is just utterly stupid, these crimes are nothing alike!!

Thanks for listening, I needed to let off steam there. Anyone else just think that 'house rape' is a ridiculous concept?

alan21: Look, I appreciate that it is a horrible thing that happened - but it absolutely IN NO WAY compares to the hideousness and the aftermath of being raped. Nothing like it. I don't need to think about it, it's bloody obvious to anyone who knows what the hell they're talking about.

Sorry if that sounds aggressive, it's not personally aimed at you. It has just made me so angry.

2007-04-13 04:47:32 · update #1

Oh, PLEASE. It is in no way comparable and if I have to explain this, then quite frankly the world has gone completely bloody insane.
*attempts to calm down before head explodes*

You can offer synonyms and dictionary definitions all you like but are you SERIOUSLY telling me that what happened here is the same as being raped and has the same consequences? Surely nobody is that clueless?

Oh, I give up.

spirit of radio - thank you so much for saying what I could not find the words for.

No, I wouldn't feel the same. I've been burgled and yes it's awful, it is absolutely nothing compared to rape.

bill: learn what you're talking about before dishing out that sort of comment. How dare you?

2007-04-13 05:29:31 · update #5

Okay, having calmed down slightly I am back to bury this one.

waspy - how dare I? Quite easily, as it goes. You've totally missed my point.

I do understand the difference in semantics, thanks. However, I think it is fair to say that I am writing from a different perspective than yourself (and plenty of others here). The objectivity you have when pointing out the various definitions of the word frequently does not extend to the victims of this crime. The point being that, if you look at the use of the term ''house rape'' from the point of view of someone having experienced the reality of rape, you're likely to be extremely distressed about it. Therefore I suggest YOU get off your own high horse and consider that, before you throw anything else at me.

Hi marco porres,
No, I wasn't invol;ved, that's a bit of a wide assumption to say the least! I do, however, have my own personal reasons for feeling the way I do, and I feel that someone needs to stand up for people who have been through real rape. Seeing meaningless terms like 'house rape' is incredibly upsetting and detracts from the hideousness of the real crime.

does that make it clear enough?

It's disgusting - how dare they use the term rape in connection with their house getting trashed. I'm sure it must have sent a shiver down the spines of those people that have sadly been in that situation. It is very thoughtless. If my car gets broken into, is that rape? If I get mugged and someone takes my wallet, is that rape? Of course not. A house is a building and can be re-built; can a soul be so easily re-built?

Interesting I hadn't heared of that.

I feel sorry for the family because it must have been a scary experience for the daughter and a shocking and depressing one for the parents. Nobody deserves their home being ruined like that.

HOWEVER

During that article I think the family made some in-sensitive comments. One of which you picked up on "House rape". Quite frankly there is a lot of difference between rape and your house being trashed. That was a thoughtless comment and when talking about something such as rape you should be carefull what you say.

Also the Mother said "Whoever has come in here are worse than animals"

Whats wrong with animals? Animals aren't alcoholics nor do they travel 1000000000000 of miles to trash somebodies house. They eat, sleep, breathe and make good companions. How dare she turn the meaning of "animal" into something beastly, childish, cruel and disgusting.

Thanks for the article!

For starters, this is my little hobby horse, I cannot understand why parents leave 16 year olds at home alone,EVER!!! In the eyes of "child Protection" the child is a child til 18 am I right? Well it's 18 here in Ireland so with this in mind and also taking into account that there are no actual laws to say what age is right to leave them I am guessing these parents met with a young teen saying "Hump of you oldies, I'm not going on a stupid caravaning holiday", now this is the problem, serious lack of control on the parents behalf. So although I dont wish them any ill will, I have to say "what the hell were you thinking leaving your 16 year old in charge of the family home?"
This also leads me to question the intelligence of the adults concerned, which leads on to their reaction to their trashed house, I'd say using the word rape was a slip of the tongue while still in shock. I would'nt say the family ever expected to be in the news but hey there you go kids today have access to way too many communication tools with way too little supervision, perhaps they will now remove the pc & actually monitor what their children are doing in their spare time.
I realize you have a strong opinion on the use of the word Rape but I think the lesson here & for millions of parents is to stop being so busy and start parenting!!

If her parents are worried for her mental state, so would I. If she honestly believed nothing would happen when she put her address on myspace she needs help. Perhaps the parents need help too if they are not aware of what their child gets up to when on a computer. The anonimity of the web causes a lot of social problems. (Excuse my rant ) but I refuse to let my son have a tv in his room although his friends have tvs/dvds in theirs and he's only 5! The computer is also downstairs where I can watch what he's doing. I have also taken computer lessons so I can find out what he's doing. But above all it's morality we should be teaching kids and making sure they socialise to avoid stupid things like this apperaring on these websites. As for that pathetic term of house rape have the police interviewed the house, taken a statement for it, given it counselling . The way the world is I'd be surprised if they didn't. But seriously you cannot compare the trashing of a house to the abhorrent act of terrorising and abusing and forcing someone to do something against their will. A person not a property has feelings. Property in a house does have value (and is becoming more and more important to a person than other people if you get my meaning) and the trashing is a violation of their privacy but as you say cannot compare to the invasion of the person. Hope this makes sense. I am in total agreement with you.

Anyone who says "you aren't the best until you go to the WWE" is a f*cking idiot. I can name plenty of wrestlers in the world not in WWE that are 10x better than over half of the WWE roster right now. Austin Aries, Chris Hero, Davey Richards, KENTA, Kota Ibushi, Shingo, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Desmond Wolfe, Christopher Daniels, Homicide, Mistico, Motor City Machine Guns, The Briscoes, Young Bucks/Generation Me, Dragon Kid, Colt Cabana, etc.. Can anyone honestly say with a straight face say that the WWE roster is great? Can anyone honestly say that a roster with Sheamus, The Miz, Great Khali, David Otunga, Vladimir Kozlov, Mark Henry, Hornswoggle, John Cena and Randy Orton is great? I don't care if they have Chris Jericho, Edge and CM Punk, the WWE roster right now as a whole is absolutely terrible. WWE is NOT the greatest promotion in the world and I don't know how anyone could say they are. WWE has some of the worst wrestlers in the world right now (Great Khali and Mark Henry are two examples). And not to mention the fact that WWE doesn't care about the midcard titles. It is a shame what the IC title, the Tag Team titles, and the U.S. title have become over the last 5 years. They are basically meaningless. WWE marks/fanboys can give me as many thumbs down's as they want but I don't give a sh*t. BQ: Difficult to choose since they are all great tag teams, but I think I will go with the The Briscoes.

I think perhaps this has been blown out of proportion here. Yes it is a slightly inappropriate use of the word rape, but then the word itself does have more than one meaning. I'm sure they didn't mean to cause any offence, its just one of those things you say without thinking. They were having a pretty traumatic time after all (no, noone is comparing it to the trauma a rape victim goes through, but it is still upsetting non the less).

Iam certain if i advertised my house as being unlocked all the time the same would happen. (i dont by the way). I think the girl should realise that what happened is inevitable however I think the true morons are the people that have so little respect for peoples property that they would trash her house. I hope she learned her lesson and maybe others can take hint from it too..

The word 'Hyperbole' springs to mind - exaggeration for dramatic effect. The description of a house being raped is preposterous or even likening what happened to physical rape. The parents probably call rust 'car cancer' and a random stranger bumping into their child is 'child molestation'. People like that do it for maximum attention and have no idea of the real meaning of their words, thus trivialising a very serious crime. The swines!!!!!
