The "reason" for religious circumcision is lost in antiquity. "Because we've always done it" is now pretty much the reason.
The modern history of this barbaric practice, however, was the anti-sex attitudes of the Victorian era and the rabid anti-masturbation views of people like John Harvey Kellogg. Consider this statement by Kellogg: "A remedy for masturbation which is almost always successful in small boys is circumcision. The operation should be performed by a surgeon without administering an anesthetic, as the brief pain attending the operation will have a salutary effect upon the mind, especially if it be connected with the idea of punishment. In females, the author has found the application of pure carbolic acid to the clitoris an excellent means of allaying the abnormal excitement. " Kellogg was a doctor and allegedly performed at least one female "circumcision" (removal of the clitoris) on a girl who was caught masturbating repeatedly.
Kellogg was not alone in believing that circumcision would "cure masturbation. The following is from E.J. Spratling, less known than Kellogg because Spratling didn't found a cereal company: "To obtain the best results one must cut away enough skin and mucous membrane to rather put it on the stretch when erections come later. There must be no play in the skin after the wound has thoroughly healed, but it must fit tightly over the penis, for should there be any play the patient will be found to readily resume his practice not begrudging the time and extra energy required to produce the orgasm... We may not be sure that we have done away with the possibility of masturbation, but we may feel confident that we have limited it to within the danger lines."
Yup, millions of men have had their genitals mutilated because these crackpots thought it was terrible to have any kind of sexual stimulation.

It was probably not the 'original' idea, though who knows why it started thousands of years ago among some tribes but not others.
It certainly _was_ the reason it first became common in the united states outside of the jewish community. There are easily researchable texts on the subject that advocated circumcision of boys who masturbated, preferably without any painkiller as a little extra reminder of what they weren't supposed to be doing. Dr. Kellogg (yes, of corn flakes fame) was a big proponent of it for this reason. Masturbation was believed to be a cause of all sorts of sicknesses.
Its not exactly clear why doctors thought this would 'cure' masturbation (since circumcised males masturbate too). Its possible that they though uncircumcised boys, in rolling back the foreskin to clean the penis would notice that it felt good. Its more likely that the doctors - likely uncircumcised themselves back then - knew that most uncut men masturbate by pumping the foreskin back and forth over the head, and didn't imagine that the boys would find new ways to masturbate. Its also possible that back then, without access to astroglide, handcream, vaseline etc. that circumcised boys really did masturbate less often (obviously men can masturbate dry, but if its less satisfying, they might do it less often. who knows).
It was perhaps a half century later that the medical establishment in the US started advocating circumcision for cleanliness. I don't think any country that didn't circumcise to deter masturbation ever started later circumcising for cleanliness. Its possible that recent HIV research may change that, but it hasn't really happened at this point.

The original idea for circumcision was Jewish.
I forget the "who" and "why" but it was in respect of God to "mark" the individuals as a demonstration of faith to Him.
Then it was found that it helped reduce masturbation in some males, and then that idea took off, again, based on religion (in the Bible it says not to spill your seed onto the ground, a religious passage that Christians believe means "don't masturbate").
So, yes and no...the original idea was Jewish, but then it was taken and changed to suit other's needs. That help?

You remember those priests and the boys???
Well it goes way way back in time,, of men playing with that stuff under guise of religion and cleanliness. Because little boys would forget to wash there and it would taste foul.
Then as the medical profession became a pay for service, They got another way to bite us for $500 Well the Insurance Co.

No, if that was the idea, it failed miserably.
The reason was that certain diseases like penile cancer, are prevented by circumcision. That was before they were able to care for illness like we can now.
Most boys are circumsized because their dad was. I think that is the reason that people are still going under the knife - because daddy was.

No - circumcision is either done for cultural reasons or for health reasons. And it really doesn't stop you from masturbating - you just need a little more lube!
