You ever see the size of a hole a torpedo leaves? It wasn't a storm that caused the hole, it was a Geman U-Boat attack, the torpedo just didn't detonate because the Minnow's hull was to soft.

If it did detonate, the show would have been 1 episode long and called "Fresh fish food for the South Pacific".

Because the hole got there from him hitting his head on it and if he took the wooden part left holding his brains in off of his head he would not longer have the capacity to fix the boat.
