XLS is the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file format, and allows you to change the information and formatting contained in the spreadsheet. This is probably preferred because it's easier to manipulate any data/text contained in the spreadsheet, and it's possible to export data from this to other programs.
PDF is Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format, which usually is unchangeable but has the benefit of preserving format across different platforms - i.e. it looks the same on someone else's screen as it does on yours. Sometimes a very useful thing.

Well, xls files are work files that are/can be modified by Excel, such as budgets, etc.

PDF ( Portable Document Format) is just that, portable. It is a format created by Adobe that allows you to make documents uneditable. PDF is great for distributing copies to subordinates because it can't be modified if it has been secured.

XLS files can be manipulated, and everyone has Excel
PDFs cannot be manipulated, unless you have the Adobe software

PDFs are generally prettier

XLS is for Microsoft Excel and PDF is for Adobe. What is your MAIN question? This doesn't do enough for me.

"PDF' files cannot be altered unless you have special software. XLS programs are based on mathematic formulae
