We recently bought a house and the carpet is really dirty. I have tried shampooing it but it hasnt made a big difference. We are on a tight budget and cant afford to buy carpet right now and area rugs are more expensive than carpet (for our room size). Any ideas on how to clean it or what to use?

Steam cleaning is better. Get Stanley Steamer to come out -- not expensive -- you will have a "new" carpet.

Purple Power to the rescue! First test a small spot just for safety, however...someone kin to me is in the carpet cleaning industry and I asked him this same question a few years ago. Purple Power/ purple stuff degreaser is what they use. And so do I now, I have 4 kids and they are not scared to spill stuff all over my carpet, which is a very light grayish blue. Put some of the purple stuff in a spray bottle and treat the spots first, let sit a few then I am guessing you have a home carpet cleaner? Use the purple stuff just as you would carpet shampoo, it is biodegradable, works wonders and any residue will dry and can be vacuumed up.

The bacteria living in the urine salts are producing ammonia like gases that are burning out your olfactory senses, this is why you no longer smell the noxious odors coming from the carpet, the carpet pad, and the floor below the pad. Anyone coming to your front door will fall over from this unhealthy stink emitting from your home. The pets (animals) will continue to pee where ever they feel like it until some one takes charge of this place. You will have to remove the carpet and the pad and put a sealer on the floor to cover all the urine salt and stains. You had best get control of your life as you are depreciating your property to the point where it will be extremely expensive to make this house livable to, for example, a pet free family who might want to purchase this property some day. The Bissel is a toy, it can not clean the carpet backing, the pad, or the floor below the pad. You should consider not allowing animals in this home any longer until you take charge and do something to inprove the property, and this means replacing eveything and keeping animals out side or in the garage.

No home cleaner wil be strong enough, call in the pros. Even then the dirt might now be so ingrained, it won't come out. Understand not being able to afford new carpeting, same boat. I use the larger area rugs from the discout stores......when I can afford them......in high traffic or visible areas. Have you checked underneath the carpet......any chance there's hardwood underneath. In a newer home, no, but some old homes may have a surprise hardwood floor under there.

This is a trick which I have found to almost always be effective: To kill pet urine smells for good, thoroughly soak the urine spot with a 1:1 combination of plain white vinegar and club soda water. If the spot is on a carpet, cover the vinegar solution with layers of newspapers or paper towels, and place something heavy on top of the papers, such as a stack of books. Be sure to protect your books from the moisture with a plastic bag. (If the pee is on an upright spot, such as a wall, from the cat spraying, then you can use a spray bottle to spray the vinegar on the area.) Leave everything on there and let the vinegar dry on the spot. The acid pH of the vinegar will counterbalance the alkaline pH of the urine, thus neutralizing the pet odors, and it *should* prevent pets from peeing there again. Vinegar stinks a bit, but it's not as bad as pet pee smell! This really works good, I have used this trick for years. They also sell special cleaners for this in pet stores, the most common one is called Nature's Miracle. I have never tried it because it's expensive, whereas the vinegar trick works great for me, and you can buy a gallon of vinegar for not much money at all. Good luck, I hope this helps =^.^=

We've had good luck with using the Hoover carpet cleaner with their solution and mixing in Oxyclean. It has done a good job on our rental property. We did it every six months.
